Summer gets sold to us as the easier season.
But for many women, summer mental health struggles are surprisingly common, even during a season that’s supposed to feel lighter.
It just feels like… more.
More schedule juggling. More people home. More camps, trips, meals, planning, social stuff, disrupted routines, and trying to keep everyone happy while pretending you’re enjoying yourself too.
Even when life is objectively good, you might still catch yourself wondering:
Why am I so overwhelmed right now? Isn’t this supposed to be the fun season?
If you’ve had that thought, I have to say, I think it’s all of us.
Summer can be surprisingly hard on mental health, and people don’t talk about it enough.
When routines change, anxiety, ADHD symptoms, and mental health challenges can become more noticeable (for both kids AND adults). Sleep gets thrown off. Hormones still do what hormones do. The mental load of caregiving doesn’t disappear just because school is out and the weather is nicer.
Sometimes summer doesn’t create the overwhelm, but it can do a terrific job at exposing how stretched thin you’ve already been.
Why Summer Can Be Hard on Mental Health
A lot of women head into summer thinking, this is when I’ll finally slow down.
And then somehow they end up coordinating everyone else’s schedules, snacks, sunscreen, emotions, carpools, and memories.
If that feels familiar, here’s your reminder:
You do not have to make summer magical all the time.
You do not have to maximize every sunny day.
You do not have to feel guilty for being tired during a season that’s supposed to feel carefree.
You’re allowed to need rest. Same goes for structure, space, and support.
You’re allowed to not love every minute of summer.
A Few Things We’re Looking Forward To
At Well Balanced Women, this season has us thinking a lot about what actually helps women feel supported, not like their worth is based on their efficiency, productivity, or whether they’re barely holding things together.
You may notice a few changes from us at WBW in the coming weeks, including a refreshed look that feels more aligned with who we are and the work we care deeply about.
We also have another update coming soon that we’re genuinely excited to share.
More on that soon.
If summer has left you feeling anxious, emotionally drained, disconnected, or struggling, support is available.
You don’t have to white-knuckle your way through it.
We’re here.
At Well Balanced Women, we support women across Ohio through anxiety, ADHD, reproductive mental health challenges, postpartum transitions, and hormonal life changes.
